Jessica Miller, MD
Medical Director
Dr Miller has trained in many different health modalities and techniques over her career. After having life- transforming experiences with homeopathy as a child after Western medicine could not cure her, her mind was opened to the larger possibilities of healing that were possible. After practicing massage therapy, acupressure, Reiki, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, and doing a 1000+ hour herbal apprenticeship, she wanted to form a bridge between Western and alternative healing. At this time she was also deeply involved in the Sustainable Farming movement, helping farmers to transition to more sustainable methods.
After being closely mentored by the phenomenal Randy Baker, MD, a founder of Integrative Medicine, she then earned her Medical Doctorate (MD) at the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She chose that school for training due to its deep commitment to Integrative Medicine, and was able to be further mentored by leaders such as Dave Rakel, MD, Adam Rindfleish, MD, and others in the growing field. She created a program using mindfulness training, nutrition, movement and support systems with underserved Latinx people newly diagnosed with diabetes mellitus which improved the health and key metrics while empowering patients to adapt culturally important practices to support them on this new stage of health.
After completing residency in Family Medicine in East Los Angeles, she then provided full spectrum family medicine while incorporating Integrative Medicine as much as possible in conventional settings.
After completing her training in Functional Medicine through Institute for Functional Medicine, Dr. Miller created Wildflower Seed Integrative Family Medicine clinic to help people on a deep, transformative level. She is excited to work with you for your optimal health!
My Conception, Pregnancies, and other stories...
My first child was conceived while in the midst of residency, with long hours, switching from day to night shifts rapidly, and general high stress. I was 35 at the time, and had been tracking my periods for years, and they were regular. When I didn't get pregnant within a few months, I started researching all about natural fertility methods. After charting, and doing Basal Body Temps, and changing my prenatal vitamin, I was finally pregnant on month 6 of trying. All good, or so I thought...
When my baby was 20 months, I weaned as I wanted to get started on baby #2. I started having hot flashes. That was my first clue. I decided to hurry up and we began charting and trying to conceive again. This time, my charts were inconsistent, but my cycles were still regular. They hot flashes were infrequent, so I didn't worry about them too much.
As the 6 month mark rolled by (I'm 38 at this point), I started working with. an acupuncturist who was ABORM certified. I promptly got pregnant but then had a miscarriage after several weeks. Several miscarriages later, I was seen by my Family Physician and we ran some basic labs while waiting for a referral to Reproductive Endocrinology(RE). Well, my AMH lab was undetectable, and my FSH was elevated, meaning I had few eggs and my body was working really hard to ovulate. After Ultrasound and antral follicle counts (low), I was diagnosed with Diminished Ovarian Reserve, as the cause of my subfertility/secondary infertility.
I had a polyp removed and was told that Donor Eggs was my only option. Well that didn't sit right and so I got a second opinion with a second RE, who said we could try but was not hopeful. My first IntraUterine Insemination (IUI) resulted in pregnancy, however this also ended in a later miscarriage. Analysis showed chromosomal errors. After this, we tried 3 more medicated IUI, but they were not successful. At the end of this, I went into a temporary medication-induced menopause for 3 months. I was told this was not caused by the medications, and that this was my body, and not given any further help. I had severe hot flashes (up to 30 a day), day and night, and I couldn't sleep for more than 1-2 hours at a time.
After this fiasco, I found several support groups and they offered me a lifeline. I was in despair. I felt betrayed by my own body, again. I was depressed. I felt that I didn't know what to do or how to go. Even with all my medical training, and my functional and integrative tools, I was at a loss.
However somewhere inside, I knew my baby was coming to me.
I did a lot of research into the best supplements to help with this condition, spending hours pouring through the published studies and the most recent medical journals. I reached out to another RE that I had spoken with and liked, but he was 300 miles away. I decided to go get a consult anyway. I continued the supplements, the healthy eating, the meditation, and the acupuncture.
The new RE was unique in that he specialized in DOR (the hardest reproductive issue to treat), and he felt that I had a chance. He was so positive and hopeful, unlike the rest who were trying to 'manage my expectations'. I was 40 with years of infertility at that point, and a physician, I knew the odds were bad. I didn't need someone telling me that, I needed someone to say that we could try, and see what happened. Well that is what we did. I did 10 rounds of IVF, retreieved 6 eggs, had all 6 fertilize and grow to the blast stage. (If you have gone through IVF, you know how utterly unheard of and amazing that is to not lose any of them! Normally you lose 75% or more!). to prevent further miscarriage, we did the genetic testing (PGT-A), but knowing that this clinic was a very early adopter of transferring mosaic and aneuploid empryos if desired. We ended up with 1 euploid embryo. After much evaluation of my uterus and the fibroids, we move forward with the transfer. I used every prep tool in my book. The 1 embryo did take, and I was pregnant!
Of course, every pregnancy test, and Ultrasound was a nervous milestone, based on the past ones where it has been bad news. Just as we were finally settling into this pregnancy, around 10 weeks, it was March 2020 and the whole world fell apart with an unknown viral pandemic! We made it through and our little one is thriving and a part of our family!
